I have a different idea. My first class- beginner- was 9 blocks, all of a different technique.
It was the best class ever as I learned soooo much! I've been quilting ever since.
The only thing we didn't try was paper piecing.

I concur with Susie; I taught a 4 patch wall hanging as a beginner class for years. All of a different technique. At the end of the class, my students could move ahead on their own.

I learned from the book Quilts, Quilts, Quilts by Laura Nownes. Each block was a little more involved than the one before and taught a lot of skills/techniques. Local library might have it.

Yes, I agree. That book was my intro to quilting.....great way to begin.....correct way to do, great patterns, great hints and a good reference book.....wonder if Amazon might have?

I love to start new students on a split rail. Not only is it a bit easier to match corners, but you get many blocks all at once. I prefer they use 3 strips at 2 1/2" each, but, I have started very young students at 3 1/2 inch strips. This allows for 4 blocks per set and they are so pleased with themselves when they get a stack very fast! I had one class of 7 year olds and I cut the WOF in half and they had no 'bowing' problem sewing their sets. While it is important to do it correctly, with a new quilter, it is also very important to get happy results quickly!

Disappearing 9-patch is fairly easy and comes out looking pretty complicated. That's one of my go-to patterns for teaching newbies. That, and rail fence.

Have fun with it! I love teaching my friends how to quilt! I've acquired six students now! It's a lot of fun, although to be honest we socialize more than we sew, most of the time.

Snow ball block alternating with a nine patch. The snowball allows for some nice quilting.

I'm making the Rhombus Star Quilt by Jenny Doan. It is so easy and instant gratification! Perfect for beginners as it's all big pieces and easy seaming together. All you need is the template and some fat quarters for the stars and solid for the background.

Warm wishes is another very easy pattern and always looks like it's more work than it is.
