My dog gets oozing hot spots every year when it gets really hot and humid. What do you use?

The vet told me to get some Bitter Apple and spray the area, plus I would get mine shaved, he had soooooooooo much hair.

I changed my dogs food to chicken & rice from Nutro and the hot spots cleared right up.

sdparent-you're right, I had forgotten about the food, but we changed him to lamb and rice and the shaving did the trick. He just had so much hair, you couldn't even feel his body underneath all his hair. LOL

Aww, poor baby. I have heard that if flies are bothering the area while he is outside that WD-40 will keep them away.

Our Maggie got them because she is allergic to wheat, so we changed her food and they went away. We also bathed her with pert plus shampoo and that helped a lot.

I bought some stuff I think at WalMart that was for hotspots. Poor things, it looks sooo uncomfortable and boy do they stink!!

Thanks for the replies. He only gets this in the summer when it gets really hot and humid so its not his food I don't think.

Yes, if it's oozy I think the vet will want to shave the area. I've tried those "hot spot" sprays but couldn't say if they worked or not.

I never thought about it, but since I changed my dogs' food to a grain-free formula (this was in desperation over a skin rash that was causing my girl to scratch herself bald in areas) they also have not had a hot spot since!! Maybe the food is just better for the skin on the whole. I use Wellness Core and salmon oil.

Try some scarlet oil. It works on all kinds of wounds, just watch out, it will stain anything including the carpet, but it works.
