Interesting. I was taught that yellow meant to proceed with caution(not speed up). As others have said though, I've gone through yellow and had light turn red before I got to other side of intersection only to see several other cars follow me.

In California the yellow light only means that a red light will soon appear. If you enter the intersection while the light is yellow, you are okay, even if the light turns red while you are in the intersection. This is our state law, but it's not the law everywhere. I stop for yellow if it is safe to do so - unless it's one of those intersections where I will have to sit for an extended period of time if I catch the red. Then I really, really try to get through the yellow, but only if I am 99% positive that I will make it into the intersection before the light turns red, and that I won't be blocking the intersection because of traffic being backed up in front of me.

I have always understood that the yellow signal means that the Red stop light will be coming soon - and it is a warning to give one time to stop.

In central Texas, I have found that green means go, yellow means quick, three more, and red means one more if cross traffic isn't too heavy.

A friend just this weekend stopped at a yellow and the guy behind her cursed her out. At the next light, he actually put his car in park , got out in the middle of a main road and ran up to her car to shout at her! (He had passed her) She even took his picture with license plate through her windshield and put it up on Facebook. He went back to his car when she told him she was on the phone to the police. Quick thinking on her part.
What are things coming to when missing a light brings this much rage on someone?

I thought of this thread today. I was coming home and traffic was moving very slowly. When I got up to the light it changed to yellow just as I got to the intersection. I stopped since I was going really slowly anyway it was no problem to stop. There was a truck behind me. He pulled to the right into a lane that was for right turn only. There was no one in it and he proceeded on thru the intersection as the light was turning red. I had to just shake my head.

If I know the intersection well, and that the red lights are very long, I tend to go through a yellow. Rarely do I speed up. If I don't know the intersection, I will slow down and stop if no one's on my tail. Since I've been rearended at a stop, I'm usually vigilant to look behind me. When the light turns green, I always take a second or two to check what's coming from either side.

I have a CRV Honda touring. The car can detect a stopping slowing car 3 cars ahead of me that I cant see. If that guy hits the breaks, my car hits the breaks. By the time my brain goes, What happened?, the 1st car had an issue, the 2nd and third car had rear ended accidents, and I am sitting there ok. This is not an ad, it happened to me. I really worried about a car that "drives itself", I'm careful, not a race through a yellow light, aware of cars in front and in back., like to make a decisions to slow down or speedup, like zozee, to avoid a rear ender. But this silly car does react faster than I do and is more help than a bother. (Hubby hates the feature that if it detects you going too close to the center or road edge, it tinkles a little sound and slowly steers you back towards the center. I prefer to "ride the edge", away from the center....but alas....my car disagrees. All these features can be turned on or off, but I am warming up to this new way to drive
