Default Who has found odd things in packaged food?

I don't know what made me remember this, but three times I've found odd things in purchased canned or packaged food. All instances happened years ago (early 70s) when I guess regulations were less strict than they are now.

The first odd thing was a grasshopper in a can of cut green beans. He was green too and pretty much looked like a bean, until I noticed the legs.

The next odd thing was a used BandAid in a can of pork & beans. Yuck! It was still curled up and stuck together like it has just slipped off the end of someone's finger.

And finally, the best one. Getting ready for a party, I opened a large bag of Fritos and poured it out into a bowl. There among the chips was a long white cord. When I pulled out the cord, I found that on the end was a piece of white fabric roughly 6"x6", with a jagged torn edge. This was a tie from a white commercial apron with a piece of the apron still attached! I've often wondered how in the world that apron tie made it through the packaging system and didn't cause a clog. But even more interesting is....what happened to the rest of the apron and the person who was wearing it?! Glad I didn't get THAT bag of chips!!

I recently emailed Libbys as I bought a case of green beans and each can has something icky. One can had white slime on them, some of the cans have rust on the beans and are mishappen. They sent me coupons for 5 free cans.....I took pictures of the slimey white ones. Gross. No explaination from them what it was.

Feathers in canned chicken noodle soup. Must be when they dragged the poor bird through the hot water to give it just a hint of chicken flavor......

Once my mom found small animal droppings in a bag of peanuts and once she found a dollar bill folded up in the bottom of a bag of salad mix.

I've been served a salad containing a roach before. Man, I was out of that restaurant quick!
My daughter, at age 4, got a mouthful of wired bread tie in a sandwich at another restaurant; thank God she was able to pull it from her mouth and express herself before swallowing! The manager was as horrified as we were!

Thankfully nothing in canned, boxed, or frozen food....heard too many horror stories of mice in drink cans, and so forth!

Well, I've just lost my appetite! I've been trying to shop at our Farmers' markets more often to avoid having to purchase canned foods. Have you tried contacting a TV station instead of the manufacturer? One of our channels loves stories like that and they do get some answers.

in Houston many years ago , i bought a package of cinnamon buns. the one with a label in the center of the wrapping. well, we ate buns from one end and when i pulled the wrapping further and under the label was a huge moth!! I used to go to the drive in movies right next to a food manufacturing plant and they always had windows at the top of the building open. Now i know how that moth got in!!!

The only things I find in prepackaged food is flour bugs. Pretty much unavoidable - eventually you'll get some. Just pick 'em out and cook. Where there is food, you'll find bugs.

Do check your canned items when you buy them though. I recently went to pay for groceries and noticed rust on a can. Discovered that it had passed the sell by date 2 years before. This is a good quality grocery store - it was obviously a lot from the wholesale distributor.
