We have in the neighborhood of 20 hummer feeders and the only thing I make sure to do before refilling them is to run them through the dish machine so they are sanitized, bacteria is deadly for hummers

Yes, the heat shrinks the plastic. I'm not sure how much of the plastic winds up in the liquid when the plastic melts, so just be aware of the possibilities when you put hot liquids in one of the bottles.

Yes, I tried it a long time ago as I wanted to have a hot tea with a lid on it while driving.

I put my feeder on a pole with a hook, does anyone else have an ant problem? I have sprayed PAM on the end but it don't always work. Any more ideas?

it's hot enough to dissolve the sugar, not so hot i have to worry about burning myself during the process, and it's easier to pour into the feeders and storage containers.

once they start coming around, the nectar doesn't last long enough to cause worry over nasty developments after it's exposed to the elements.

I had the same problem and sprayed the bottom 10" or so of the hook with WD-40. The ants didn't seem to care for that very much.
