Who Likes a Good Polka?

I'm like Charismah, I don't know that I've ever really heard polka music. My grandma was an avid Lawrence Welk fan, so if he played polka music (I don't know if he did or not) I probably heard it without knowing what it was. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest. Maybe it just wasn't popular there...

Okay here is another twist to this thread.......How old are we and listen to Polka.
My wife just gets a kick out of me watching the Big Joe Polka Show. She (and I for that matter) are wondering what is the average age of folks posting on this thread that listen to that listen to Polka.
I am 43 and I really love it. She is 56 and thinks I am nuts
Oh and they still show reruns of the Lawrence Welk Show on Saturdays too. So I make sure I catch that one before I see the Bill Gaither Hour!!!

Billy- I still watch Lawrence Welk too. Comes on right before Ballroom Dancing and PA Polka.
I'm 50 for a few more days, then I turn 17 for the third time on Sunday. Hubby is 60.
I never really appreciated the polkas until I met him. Of course, he plays Irish music too and Italian love songs. And he tolerates my country music and classical music. My latest craze is 50s, 60s and 70s- the oldies but goodies. I just love to listen to music.

If you go to www.live365.com, you can get streaming music of pretty much any type you want. They've got Glam, Goth, Grunge, and Gangsta Rap... and that's just "G".
Here's one polka station for you:
http://www.live365.com/stations/primetimepolkas
It's out of Pittsburgh, PA.
And there's more where this came from.
So anyone who's never heard a polka, have a listen!

I am a WWII baby, as is my cousin, Grandma Polka!
My friends who go Polka Dancing here in the St. Louis area are in their early 70's.
I watched Lawrence Welk on Saturday night forever live (?) and then on PBS. They moved it to Sunday afternoon here and I forget about it until it is over!

I still have to buy the drivelines, interior, paint, brakes, etc. and then my labor for building the cars. All of this is for one customer and its a his and her build. And they have to be finished by June for a GoodGuys Show in Indy.
Then I have my 1932 Ford Roadster I am building for me along with my 1949 Ford lead sled thats due for its bi annual paint job, and a bullet nosed Studebaker that will have a full tube chassis with a Blown aluminum big block and 6 speed.
I am building the motor for the Stude as we speak, I picked up the block and heads from Jegs when I picked up the coupes in Ohio. I was going to use a Motown block but since I went with the Brodix heads the Brodie block seemed like a good match for them. It should be around a 688+ cubic inch motor when its finished.
I will be lucky to even be able to quilt with all of this going on right now. But I bet I will find some way to squeeze one in.
But at least I some Polka to listen too!!!

My mother listened to the Yugo Sneider program on the radio every Sunday all the years I was growing up. It was pure German Polka. I love to listen to it, she called it.. umpa pa music (probably spelling incorrect there). I used to dine at a couple restaurants locally that were German just so I could listen to the music and watch the Saturday night dancers. They could COOK on that floor. I am 48. It was NOT the music of my generation. It didnt stop me from loving it however. Now I will have to search out that channel just for old memory boosting.

I can still hear my dad who was German singing "Roll Out the Barrel". There is a German place called Blobs Park near Fort Meade, Maryland. Polka was danced all the time along with the chicken dance, Mexican hat dance, bunny hop, swing, etc. I do think that dancing is coming back.
