    My DH took the hard drive out of tower and destroyed it. Staples will do it for a price they a geek squad like best buy

    do a complete reformat from the very beginning...when you do this it'll leave a folder called "windows old" delete it..then your system will be clean

    A 12-gauge shotgun will also wipe the hard drive clean and it is soooo satisfying. Of course, safety must be ensured and it helps to be out in the county area where it's okay to blast things in the pasture or wherever. DH uses the sledgehammer on the hard drive of our old ones.

    Software to retrieve information is not hard to get and while some of it may be fragmented, anyone can get plenty from your computer. Best solution: take out the hard drive (relatively easy to get to) and drill holes in it.

    You are using the wrong term. Memory is lost everytime you turn off the power. You are referring to the Hard Drive. Reformat the drive. That will clear out all storage and also the programs and operating system.

    Trust me. It won't. I worked for a municipality where there was some shady stuff on the computers. They thought they could do just that and it would be gone. It wasn't. Although I am not an IT person, I was able to pull up a LOT with ease.

    You don't need to remove the motherboard. The motherboard is the board that has electronic chips that are programmed to make the computer read what you key in or what you save. The saved stuff is on the hard drive. Best Buy will recycle up to 3 items per day (inlcuiding monitors, old TVs, etc only if hard drives are removed. Drill holes and destroy the hard drive.

    If your throwing it away why don't you just take the hard drive out and destroy it?
