Which would you nominate for worst/best book-to-movie adaptation?

I always made my kids read the book before I would take them to see the movie and they ALWAYS said it was better in their minds!

Worst - Bonfire of the Vanities - great read, dreadful film adaptation.
The Keira something adaptation of Pride and Prejudice - just awful.
Best - Fried Green Tomatos and To Kill a Mockingbird
And, I agree with beebs on the BBC Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth - simply wonderful

I think the movie going on in my head while I read is so much better than anything they put on the screen.
I work hard to encourage my students to make movies in their head while they read. I didn't know that many people who read, don't always make movies in their head. So sad because they are missing out.

I read someplace that the best thing to adapt to a movie is a short story. When you think about it it's true. The movie can be detailed and not gloss over the best parts of a story while to fit a novel into a movie so much has to go.

One that no one has mentioned is "Pillars of the Earth" by Ken Follett. A great book and a great TV adaptation -- although a series rather than a movie. And that might be part of the secret: Most books have too much detail to be successfully translated into a two hour movie. I think that is one of the reasons why the "Twilight" movies have been so bad (IMO), the other main reason being the awful acting (again, IMO)!

i was surprised no one mentioned gone with the wind... they delete a couple kids, but they were never central to the story anyway.. kind of an aside...
that is my favorite movie of all time, and have reread the book so many times that the pages are falling out...
plan to ask for a new copy for christmas
also... love nora roberts, but the "adaptations" on lifetime channel are horrendously bad!
