I have seen some pretty decent book-to-movie adaptations, and then I have seen some real 'stink-o' jobs.

First place would have to be the bizarre treatment of "Mists of Avalon". Second would be "Clan of the Cave Bear". Both of these would be hard to guess what book they were from, if you didn't know ahead of time.

I liked the work they did on "DaVinci Code" . (I missed "Angels and Demons" so don't know about that one yet.)

I liked the book and the movie both of Clan of the Cave Bear. I actually have it on my kindle. :) But I read that back in 1989 or so and have read it several times.

Right now I am into the Twilight Saga by Stephanie Meyers.
I have troubles comprehending what I read for the most part But I think that the movies are following the books pretty well. I have seen a few "differences" in the movie then how the book describes scenes, but not a big difference. But everytime the "new movie" in the series comes out, I have to read the book that corresponds to it.

Flowers in the Attic...now that was a joke of a movie. That didn't do the book any justice. So that gets five thumbs downs for me. But I do like the series. :)

The Memory Keeper's Daughter by Kim Edwards. I absolutely loved the book!!!! Highly recommend it! A couple of months after I finished the book, a made for tv movie came out about it and it completely STUNK! Lost so much from print to video. . . big disappointment

Clan of the Cave Bear sucked as a movie.

I was not enamored with the Lord of the Rings movies either in comparison to the books. It was awful how the characters of some of the main players was changed. Samwise was never mean to Gollum and he never coveted the ring. It also really bothered me how Lord Denethor and Faramir's relationship was bastardized. That said, that book was HARD to read.

One movie that I liked better than the book was "Time Machine" (but the original version)

Best adaption ... the Tolkien Trilogy hands down. Another great was The Old Man and the Sea.

Worst ... sadly the list is far too long.

My Sister's Keeper was a good book and an OK movie, but the two didn't even resemble each other.

To Kill A Mockingbird and The Killing Fields have got to be two of the best, IMHO. The worst is tougher...was it Bonfire of the Vanities? Or The Scarlett Letter? I won't torture myself watching either of these again to make the comparison!!

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil goes on the worst list.

I saw the Lord of the Rings movies and loved them! I read the books too, and I'm probably of the minority who prefer the movies. Bad movies...let's see...almost every Stephen King one, the worst being The Shining with Jack Nicholson (the remake with Steven Weber was truer to the book and I thought much better).
