What a treasure to have your grandmother teach you to quilt. I love Vicky's idea of making one with her, but if you want to surprise her I would look to a pattern you may have already done with her during that time - to show her what you have learned from her.

What about a picture quilt, which might include family pictures. I don't have a pattern, but sure you could find one via this board.
