Hello, I am a new quilter working on my 3rd quilt. For the first two I had trouble with the binding stitch. Never having been a sewer, my binding stitches are visible. Does anybody have any tips or resources that could direct me on the proper technique? Any help would be appreciated!

welcome when you move from one stitch to another do it inside your fabric, when you come out take a very small stitch through the binding then travel through the fabric to the next spot.

Thank you for your answer. I think that is what I am doing, but you can still my stitch. I was using a straw needle but I can't consistently "bind" the fabric without the stitch showing. I guess maybe it just takes practice!

    Hi there,

Your problem sounds like me when I first started. My sis told me to sew it on with right sides together on the machine then fold it to the back side and hand stitch down. Comes out neat as a pin.

    Good luck

The only other thing I can think of is to use thread the same color as your fabric or one shade darker. Oh! One MORE thing....put the quilt on the back of the couch. Walk across the room....NOW can you see those stitches? No? OK!! :D

Morning and WELCOME to the best group on the 'net!!! I think, mho, you are worrying about something that should show. What is quilting? Sandwiching batting between two fabrics and stitching them together. That means the stitching WILL show. When you are slip stitching the binding, if a minute amount of the stitch shows on the back or front, it adds to the quilting look. None will ever be completely invisible, nor should it me, for a good look to the product. Consistent stitches with a matching thread will help to minimize the look of the thread, though, it will blend in better!

Hope to get to know you better and I'm hoping you are enjoying your foray into the world of addiction to fabrics. :-)
