Greetings from Northern California and I hope you have lots of fun learning the machine quilting.
I read that you are looking at the Janome 6600. Are you aware that Janome JUST came out with a brand new model, the Horizon 7700. I saw her at the dealer yesterday and she is a nice machine. The Horizon has an 11" throat space and a free arm (the 6600 does not have a free arm). The Horizon has a built-in plate that slides in place when you do only straight stitch sewing. She also has all the features of the Janome 6600 and more.
