Hi from Shanghai!

I just joined the forum this morning and was almost instantly caught up in a chat, it was great!
Just to let you all know a bit about me, I was born and raised in Chicago and lived in the midwest until 1996 when we moved from St. Louis (would that be considered midwest you think?) to Portland Or. We moved here to China two years ago as my husband was transferred here. We really love it, it's been a great experience so far. I have joined an international quilt group here which is great and have been doing a little teaching and a lot of quilting among other things.
My husband and son (17) are here in Shanghai with me and I have 5 other children home in the states and 6 grandchildren. I've been quilting for about 30 years now and haven't even come close to doing all the projects I'd like to do, but then who has?
I really look forward to getting to know quilters here and am hoping for some new friendships.

Not as many as you would think. They have whole buildings devoted to fabrics, but most of them are geared towards garment making and do not like to sell small amounts, even if it's small amounts of many different fabrics. Most of the shops that sell cotton fabrics either sell cotton with some kind of stretchy fibers in them, or shirt cottons which are basically stripes. There are two quilt shops here that I know of but the fabric there is imported and very expensive. All the rulers and mats and such are all in centimeters instead of inches which can be very frustrating.

I can relate. I spent 4 years in Germany in the mid-70's and there didn't seem to be much in the way of good fabric, patterns or anything to speak of back then! Isn't it great that now we've got the Internet? This site is so informative and helpful. Great people, wonderful ideas.

Welcome!
I have a young friend who is living an working in Shanghai, and recently married a lovely Chinese girl. He is having a great time while he is there, but planning on moving back to the states this summer. My brother has traveled over there quite a bit, as has a friend. My friend actually adopted twins from China. I posted some pictures of clothing and stuff I have made for them in the pictures forum.
Would love to have you post pictures of the area around you!
