You will get lots of inspiration and help just shout out.
I would recommend attending a local class or lots of LQS have drop ins where you can bring your machine and project and although not an actual class the owner and other quilters help out and advise.

Hi Sarah ,welcome from colchester, 30 years aga I was a student and worked in Littlewoods food store in Southport. I remember wonderful shopping arcade and a biting cold wind( it was November!) This website is the friendliest I have ever come across. You will love it!!

Welcome to the board. Sorry to hear about your cousin...but I understand wanting to keep your promise to her. I will soon be making 2 memory quilts for my MIL's 2 sons from her shirts. You will find lots of help here on the forum. I have learned a lot here! Enjoy!
