My sympathies for your loss. I made my children and grandchildren quilts from my husband's shirts. They were chambray so I used simple blocks like rail fence, double nine patch, etc.
I often make memory quilts for customers using clothes and a simple block is best and machine quilted. Make a label telling the story of the clothes, names, dates, etc. and you have a winner that will be long-cherished.
With just shirts a log cabin pattern would work as well.

Welcome to the board.
I am sorry for your loss. The idea of a quilt from his shirts is a great idea. Someone already mentioned Bonnie Hunter's site. She is a great reference for using clothing in quilts.
It will be a wonderful keepsake. Keep us posted on your progress.

I saw one several months ago - someplace. Basically cut all you pockets out with enough fabric around them to be a 5 or 6 inch square. Sew them together either on point or not. Surround them with 2 or 3 inch wide strips to make it as big or little as you want. The pockets were not wasted and you can hide a note or hankies or whatever in them.

I made nine patch on point from my son's shirts. He wore mostly plaid so the triangles for the on point were made out of his shirts. turned out really nice. I saved the pockets, button and button hole strips and collars. will incoroparate in another quilt hopefully.

I have made photo albums covers, is allows you to use the buttons(I put most on the binder edge)the pockets(on the front or even inside. I also cross stitched the name,or grandpa, or something on the front. I always loved the idea of making something for someone from remembered clothing.

Do a search on here for shirt quilts. I found one that used 7 shirts and she showed how to cut apart the shirts, make strips & squares and how to piece into a quilt. I did have it bookmarked but that was on my computer that crashed. Use the search & see what shows up! Good luck.
