This forum is so helpful and it's always good to hear that others are going through some of the same things I am. I wonder if anyone knows of a good reference or even some good tips on selecting fabrics for a quilt. Getting the technical aspects of sewing is very important, but being able to select the "right" fabric (colors and prints) can make or brake any design.

    Hello, and welcome from Missouri.
What do you mean about picking a color for a quilt? I look at pictures and that often gives me an idea where to start. But when I want colors to go with a focus fabric, I look at the color dots in the selvedge. Those dots will help with picking colors that are in the focus fabric, and will go with each other. A Color wheel helps also.

Hello, and welcome! As far as picking out colors, I generally go with what attracts me. Sometimes I step out of my comfort zone, but mainly I get colors I like and go forth from there.

I'm also a newby. I see you are from Long Island. My grandmother and mom were from Long Island - Sag Harbor, East Hampton and Montawk Point. I think I'm going to enjoy posting here.

If you choose a fabric that has many colors in it and you LOVE... I mean really LOVE the fabric... choose color/prints to go with that fabric that you can find within it. Also... most fabric companies place a register along one of the selvages that shows little tiny swatches of every color that is in the fabric. I find these very helpful if I am stumped about one more color I need to add. Beyond that... if YOU like your choices... they are RIGHT.... no one else matters. YOU are the ARTIST.
