I have problems with real thimbles.. they just don't fit.I use Thimblits..64 stickers to the pack. They are oval shaped and stick to your finger until you peel it off. Needles cannot pass through it.

Finding the right thimble can be a real quest. My favorite is an old brass thimble that belonged to my husband's grandmother. It was a "premium" or a prize given by her local feed store--probably around 1920 or so. I've found a couple I liked at quilt shows and one at a quilt shop. There's no specific brand or type to recommend because preferences vary so much from person to person. Just keep hunting. You'll find it.
