    Smile New(ish) Quilter

    Hello, Quilting Board quilters!

I'm a relatively new quilter-- meaning that I've been working on quilts for a few years, now, but haven't actually completed that many, yet!

I started out as a rag quilter (using denim and flannel), and after making several of those, I decided to try traditional quilting-- piecing cotton, making a quilt sandwich, etc.

I've only finished one "real" quilt so far-- a string quilt from a kit my mother made for me-- but I also have one quilt top finished and another that is nearly ready. There's also a growing collection of crumb blocks and about five smaller quilt projects (about runner and small wall-hanging size). My "would like to make" list is long.

I enjoy piecing and love finished quilts, but I want to find a better solution for the actual quilting of my projects, because I do Not enjoy wrestling blankets through my domestic sewing machine (straight-line stitching only, so far), and yet I shudder at the thought of hand-quilting much, because I'm not great at hand stitching. (I'm sure I can learn, and I'd like to try it on a small project, sometime, but I'm not excited by the thought of hand-stitching or tying all my future quilts.)

So that's really why I've finally joined this board. I'm hoping to maybe get some in-put on where to go from here, and I'll be posting questions elsewhere on the forum, eventually. I've already found some valuable information while browsing the board, and I'm sure that's only the beginning!

Welcome to the board! Oh yes, you will find tons of great info here.
As for quilting- you will also hear a lot of different ways to make a quilt. I started hand quilting only but have recently been learning how to free-motion quilt b/c I have way too many ideas than time
So far so good but it's a lot different from hand quilting.

Hello & welcome from Texas. Since you don't relish the thought of having to struggle with quilting a whole quilt on your domestic sewing machine have you considered the Quilt As You Go method? It's where you make a block, sandwich that individual block with the batting & backing & quilt the individual block. When you've got all your blocks made & quilted then you put them together with sashing between to make your finished quilt. There are several different ways to quilt as you go & many you tube tutorials, etc. on the web. Hope this will help you. I've never done the QAYG method but hope to try it soon.
