Wow, I am just overwhelmed by the welcome and warmth!
I'm from Iowa, so it was nice to see a couple Iowans respond. And I spent years travelling around the country teaching dog training. My favourite gig was four or five times a year in Texas, at the home and training facility of a wonderful woman who has remained a good friend. So many seminars presented in so many states, seeing all the different states brings back such happy memories.
And my mother was English! She taught me to knit and embroider before I was six years old. My grandparents had a little pre-printed cross stitch table topper that I did before I was seven--I can't even remember making it.
My father is still using the queen/king sized quilt I made. I did enjoy making it but, well, life events got in the way and I wasn't able to do anything creative for nearly fifteen years. But life moves on and I now have the good luck to pursue interests that I had to let go back then.
I've sewn much of my own clothing for most of my life and I always enjoyed the hand sewing bits. The last jacket I made, I don't think I did any significant amount of pinning because I hand basted everything into place before using the machine. I enjoyed doing the basting more than the machine work!
My long term goal now is to make a quilt in memory of my mother, who died recently. I have several dresses and fabrics from her stash to use. I already know it will be colourful because she loved colour. I have a pattern in mind and a plan of attack.
But my first step is going to be perfecting my quilting stitch so that I can do justice to that quilt. I've got some dark fabrics, batting and white quilting thread on order so I can make some whole cloth place mats, cushion toppers, etc, and figure it out. I've been reading and re-reading Liuxin Newman's book and practising a bit with scraps layered together and can already see improvement in my stitches.
And, um, thank you for your warm welcome. As y'all can see, brevity is not one of my accomplishments.
