    I second the recommendation of pot holders. I learned how to quilt by making up a bunch as Christmas presents for the office crowd.

    They're quick, small, you get to practice a bunch of different patterns, you try your hand at quilting as well as piecing, and binding. And they're useful.

    Placemats are always nice and quick -- so are table toppers. For the table toppers you can find a block you like and add borders. The placemats can be very simple.
