Welcome from Washington. I love my inexpensive Brother XR9000 that I bought at Costco. I know that a lot of quilters have much fancier machines than me. Maybe one day...But it does what I wanted: needle up/down, serpentine stitch, needle threader. Have fun trying out all the great machines out there.

you do not need a new machine to do applique...a straight stitch works just fine for applique- also many of us who do TONS OF APPLIQUE use a zigzag.

Check out Husqvarna Vikings...They have the sensor foot which lefts the foot automatically and is the greatest machine for applique.

I agree with the other quilters. If I had it to do all over again, I would buy an older machine used, perhaps from a garage sale or Craigslist. I purchased a Bernina as I like the knee lift and thought I'd get a top of the line machine. I've owned about 7 different brands of machines over the years and have owned industrial machines also. My Bernina 180 has given me nothing but problems, serviceman can't figure out why timing has gone out 5 times in 3 months. My issue with Bernina is isolated and most people love their Bernina's. What is important to remember is you only need straight, reverse, zigzag stitching. Having the feature of changing the needle position from left to right I would also recommend. Luckily for me, we had a very old Elna in shed that my husband brought in for me. It purrs and purrs and I'll never want for another machine. Sometimes the feet or other attachments for a spendy machine are also very spending and ridiculous in price, in my opinion. Hey, I have a Bernina 180 for sale, repairman/dealer offered me $350.00 to buy it back even though he is selling one like it for $1,800.00 in his shop. Anyone want it? Make me an offer. This is such a great website and all you ladies have been inspirational to me in life and sewing, caring, thoughtful, intelligent, HELPFUL and kind. Thanks to the women (and men?) who monitor us and thanks to whomever had the idea of the website.
