I am probably in the minority here but I do most of my applique by hand. I fuse it to the background and do a blanket stitch with embroidery floss.---works for me
(but, I have to add if the quilt is to be used and washed alot, you probably want to machine stitch it down with some of the other ideas expressed......)

Welcome to the board; this is a great place for inspiration and advice. Like many have said, test drive as many machines as you can before your commit to buy. Check used machines at local dealers and even the thrift stores or local quilt quilds - someone might have an extra. Do you have craigslist, that's another good resource.
