Hi I'm Genavieve. I'm new to quilting and a student from University of Oregon. My mom taught me to sew this last Christmas and I made about 10 sets of pot holders for my family. I'm in the United States Army and was actually surprised how much I would love sewing. I just recently made some catnip pouches for the local animal rescue and worked on some double sided aprons for my nieces.

Since I am away at college(away from my mom/teacher), I am looking for someone local who can maybe help me touch up my skills. I am always up for ideas and new patterns to try out. My mom encouraged me to join this site in hopes of meeting some quilting friends(her username is Elisabrat) so please feel free to message me and give me suggestions.

Hi and welcome. Try doing a computer search by typing in: quilt quilds in or near___________________(where ever you are) and see if anything comes up. You might also ask at local fabric shops and see if there's any classes.

Welcome to the board from Southern California!!
I hope you can find someone near you that can help you along with your quilting. I know we have a several ladies in Oregon.
My Daughter joined the Army reserves after graduating from George Fox University. She has been in 5 years now and had 2 year long deployments.
I wish she would get the quilting bug!!!

HELLO SWEETPEA!!! Welcome!!! To the board members this is someone extremely dear to my heart.. my little girl. I told her to come here and see much fun this board is. Gena recently picked up sewing in about 2 minutes of lessons and is coming home in a few days on spring break from college and I plan to teach her how to make a 9 patch block!! Please tell her that there are lots of younger people on here also on here but mostly its age doesn't matter so much and if you don't know it.. someone will assist you almost all the time. Gena, Make sure you hit the pictures, the tutorials and of course the general chit chat for goofy stuff. ok the whole site, hit the whole site. Once you start "window shopping" you can't stop. Yahoo! Another convert!!

    Gena,
All genders, all ages, all levels, all treated the same---like well loved family.
Within a few weeks you too will be a hopelessly addicted Quiltologist. You may even change your major and decide to design fabric for the rest of us.

welcome from a Duck fan! It's nice to have you join the board. I know you'll find fellow quilters to be very kind and helpful. I'm afraid if this site had been around when I was in college, I'd have failed my classes. I'd have been checking out the board instead of studying. Best of luck in your new hobby!

Genavieve: Glad to have you. My doll quilt partner is in the Air Force, stationed in Germany. I am a disabled veteran of the Army. I joined a year before the WAC was disbanded. When I went to basic training, we wore white tennis shoes, white anklets and green skirts with shorts underneath. We rode on buses to class and the only running we had to do was the 900 yard walk run. Pretty easy. No real field training and no rifle stuff. You can imagine how I felt when I was the only woman on the rifle range with about 500 men, and I was the only one who had never shot a gun or held a bullet. I qualified expert that day, and sharp shooter on the night range. Captain got really mad at his men. A 'girl' had out shot most of them. A week later, we went to the field with the captain and AG company (I was in the band). The band captured the whole group of 'enemy' after about 30 minutes. The captain got really angry and said he wasn't ever going to do anything with the band every again. He should have told AG company to stop playing cards by flashlight, stop smoking, and to be quiet.

I grew up in Ashland, Oregon. There are many wonderful ladies who belong to this forum. Also, there is a thread where you can ask to be mentored by another quilter. The University of Oregon might have some classes or there might be classes offered through the County Extension Office. Also, check the adult education opportunities through the local school district. They often offer classes in quilting or just general sewing. I live in Utah and will be glad to help, even if we have to use pictures. Just let me know what you would like to work on and we can get started.

Anyway, welcome. Glad to have you here. Gwyn

Welcome from Canada.....you are embarking on such a wonderful adventure - quilting and patchwork in general is just a fabulous thing.....I have been sewing for many a moon....before you were born.. :-)....and till love it and it has remained my passion - that will tell you how fulfilling it is...
You are to fortunate to have your mom to past down her tricks to you - (and you can perhaps raid her stash).. :-)
