Hi and welcome from Lebanon Oregon. My backs used to be awful. I didn't know how to prevent the sewn in wrinkleys. So now I tape my back to the floor or the top of the ping pong table, pulling it a little taught while taping with masking tape. I tape about every 8-10 inches. Then I lay the batting on top, then the quilt top. Spread the top out and begin pinning every 4 inched or so starting in the center. I machine quilt mine, not enough time in a decade for me to hand quilt and No more wrinkley's on the back!!!

Welcome from Norfolk, VA. You can quilt however makes you the happiest. The more you do it the better it'll get. The more print or design you have on your back and the more your thread blends into it the less you'll see the mistakes. Normally, people who don't quilt, don't see the mistakes that we see anyways. Your grandson will love it because you made it for him. Trust me; my grandkids love what I make and I have no perfect quilts. Only perfect intentions.
