you do not HAVE TO STITCH IN THE DITCH on any quilt if you don't want to- an all over design is used on lots of quilts with out s.i.d...it is your choice how you quilt it- as long as you follow the guidelines required by your chosen batting- some batts require very dense quilting (like every 2 inches) others allow up to 10" between stitching lines....beyond those recommendations you can do what ever you want.

Your shirt quilts sound wonderful! I'm using a 50/50 cotton bamboo blend. I think it said 4 to 6 inches apart. My meander is going to be closer than that. I'm still stuck on the sashing. On my practice quilt I did echo quilting in the sash and meander on the shirts, but in another part I meandered over the sash and it looks cool too. This is my very first quilt and I've probably picked a difficult one to start with. Between the stretchier fabric and the invisible thread and of course I tend to be really hard on myself. I'm learning quilting and my machine at the same time. My husband bought me the Laura Ashley Brother NX2000 for our 21 wedding anniversary last week. I've never sewn on a machine the can go in any direction...very cool!!

I also used to have a quilting machine and did alot of tea shirts for graduation etc. I would just do the meandering all over even the borders and forget the stitch in the ditch.
