Do you want to make a strip pieced octagon?
You have to make two at once!
Make an Octagon paper pattern, When you fold it into a wedge shape (1/8 of the pattern) you will have a template. add seam allowance.
Make a cardboard pattern.
Sew enough strips of fabric together that the wedge pattern will fit on it top to bottom. Iron! Use starch.
Lay the wedge on the fabric , with the wide end of the fabric aligned with the bottom edge of the sewn strips, and mark around the sides.
Keep doing this until you have EIGHT pieces UP, and EIGHT pieces DOWN. You might have to sew more than one set of the strips.
Then using a plastic ruler cut along the drawn lines.
Sew each set of triangle wedges together, careful to match the seams that are between the colors.
You will have one table topper of the ups, and one table topper of the downs. They will look very different!

Hi 57 Granny - I'm 70 and a new quilter - well, one year into it but still definitely a beginner. Last year I saw where someone on this board posted a picture of a Hexigon Table Topper and I loved it. Maybe it is something you might be interested in. You know it had to be pretty easy in order for me to follow and get it made correctly. She had a link to the tutorial and I followed it and made my neighbor a pretty red table topper to go with her kitchen. I already tried once posting this and don't know where it went to so I'm going to try again. I'll add the link and then a couple pictures of the one I made for my neighbor.

Enjoy - and let me know if you make one. Pat
