My name is Jan and I live in the foothills of the VA Blue Ridge Mountains on a 200 year old farm. My little cottage *is* my studio...the bedroom, bath, and kitchen are mere tag-a-longs. :-D Two sweet Tuxedo barn cats (Pearl and Ascot) are my outdoor companions and daily hugs.
I've been quilting over 27 years, taught, designed, created patterns, sold quilts, owned a large quilt store, served on several quild boards and started a couple others over the years. Now I'm "tired" so I've retired from careers in childbirth education, labor companioning, dentistry, counseling, library, real estate, retail ownership, and mothering....although, I suppose one never really retires from the latter. Two daughters, one is a superb 5th grade teacher, one is an Air Force pediatrician; one grandson in 6th grade who not so secretly longs to learn to quilt, but can't be kept out of a pool long enough to dry off!
I have a passion for teaching quilting, traditional quilts, reproduction fabrics, textile history, antique quilts, machine piecing and hand quilting. I enjoy using a technique called "big stitch quilting" which is easier on my hands and eyes and makes wonderful designs on the quilt surface. I'll post separately about that later.
This is my second 'membership' in an online quilting board as I was part of a group called Sunshine Quilters back in the mid-1990s. Quilters are never strangers, have you noticed? Just good friends one hasn't yet met. I'm really pleased to be meeting you all here!
