Default Applique using wonder under and bias strips

I would like to make vines for my applique quilt. I'm using Wonder under. When I cut strips on the bias and apply The Wunder under will the strip's be able to curve?

Not sure about the wonder under, but I did see a technique which used gathering stitches on each side of the stem to gently ease the curve. Seems like wonder under might stiffen the stem.

Usually you cut a strip on the bias, sew a scant seam and the turn it inside out and press the seam so it is underneath. I have never used wonder under or any fusible when I do vines for applique.

Yes, they will be able to curve but there is a better product available. There is 1/4 inch fusible tape like what can be used to turn hems on pants. It is precut and easily bends to follow a curve.

You might try the new Steam a Seam . It is very light weight and flexible . I just used it on some bias stems which were single layer, then top stitched with blanket stitch.

Since the strips are bias cut, I just curve them like I want and pin in place. The bias is easy to curve, IMHO.

Why aren't you using water soluble glue? I use Elmer's.....dots, then use clover iron...let set then sew.

Exactly! I go with Elmer's School Glue and tiny dots- you can curve it its on the bias. I suggest you draw a faint line that represents the center of your vine and it will be covered by the bias strips. I have used the metal bias bars in the past and love them. Since glue is no longer a four-letter word in the world of hand appliqué I use it when necessary and do t feel guilty like I did 20 or so years ago when I got the stink eye from my appliqué groups for mentioning the word "glue". Don't you love how times change😄😄. Just don't use Wonder Under - almost impossible to hand sew and gums up needles for machines. The Steam-a-Seam Lite should be perfect if you go that way - cut in strips just slightly smaller than your finished stem width and press on.

I tried basting bias tape stems with Elmer's school glue, then sewing them down by hand and machine. One of these methods might work better than wonder under with the bias tape?

I used Under Wonder on this sea grass and was very happy with it. I fused the WU to a rectangle of sea grass fabric, then drew the curvy shapes, cut them out, fused, and zigzagged around the edges.
