Color catchers can be made at home with washing soda. There is a thread on here somewhere telling us how to do that. You make a solution of washing soda and water. Soak fabric squares (old wash cloths, towel pieces, rags) in that solution, then hang them to dry. Use them just like the color catchers from the store. Maybe someone can find the link to those directions.

The original Color Catchers were by Carbona, made with special terry cloth like fabric. They were sold in quilt shops and Hancock's Fabrics. Any 100% non treated cotton fabric can be used for a color catcher but it is expensive.

I recently washed a large quilt at the laundry-mat and put 4 color catchers in the wash. I was very worried that the colors would run. They didn't and the color catchers disappeared. I don't know what happened to them and neither did the attendant. I wanted to see if they had any color on them. Strange, huh.
