Sorry, jokir44. I didn't get back to this post until now. I spray quite heavily and do iron it when it is dry. I have also used the "dip" method with this starch and my fabric is almost like card stock paper. I usually use wool batting although I have used some kind if polyester and it works well. It also works on both regular cotton and batiks.

Just a couple more questions SAILORWOMAN please. when I asked if you ironed it dry I meant do you iron it until it gets dry. You evidently mean that you layer the quilt, spray it, let it dry and then iron. In that case do you use steam to reactivate? No need to say sorry. I'm just happy you answered. It will be a while before I need it as I have a couple of UFOs to complete.

I have to apologize for my posts. I obviously did not read the original thread carefully and gave a recipe for spray starch. Sorry for any confusion I caused.

It is interesting what goes into my shopping cart after a morning of reading this board. My husband demanded to know why I wanted castor oil and then why I would not buy the bottle that said Black Castor Oil and listed two additives for soft skin. I told him it was none of his business. Then I asked the woman in the fabric dept. for the crazy colored Duct Tape and 20 questions started again. He left the cart with me and was coming back from the hardware dept. about the time I reached up for the gallon of school glue, questions again. No wonder I am worn out after shopping. I usually get a bit more freedom, but after a few falls with some nasty landings. We have both agreed that it is good for him to stay close by or let me hang onto him.
Sometimes it's a plus when dh goes with me - other times I can hardly stand it! I also actively dislike having to explain why I'm getting something.

Thanks so much. I’m out of pocket and won’t be able to make it for a few months, but I plan to try again in September. I’ll try your recipe also.

I too have followed the recipe on Chatterbox Quilting for the basting spray and have used about 4 bottles so far. I have had great luck and am so tickled how much money I have saved. The only tip I would add is that I make it in the evening because it seems to take awhile to come to room temperature. That way, in the morning I put it in a spray bottle and am good to go.

Walmart is selling gallon jugs of Elmer's School Glue for $19.99. I'd go that method before using boiled flour or unflavored gravy.
I have used Elmer's glue for basting but the spray goes on much finer and covers the whole surface. I like the spray for bigger quilts. You have to try both to know the difference. And try the bought sprays to compare to the homemade spray. I have used them all even, the fusible battings. My best way is the homemade spray. I use a pump sprayer for the garden.

I am very new to this so forgive my ignorance. How do you use Elmers Glue? Do you thin it with water and then spray it like basting spray?
    thanks.

SAILORWOMAN, I made your recipe that you now say is for starch. Let me tell you that it worked well on a lap quilt as basting spray. So whatever it is it worked well for me. Thanks.
