I had a fantastic home ec teacher. She sewed custom wedding dresses and made all the costumes for the local plays. She wrote several cookbooks for the Home Extension office. She had us make an A line skirt, long sleeve blouse, and vest using a bought pattern and doing everything by the book. Then we made another one using her short cuts and fitting techniques. The advanced class learned how to draft patterns and drape fabric. The class had a fashion show every year of the students work. I know we learned as much about sewing in her classes as some do in design school now.
