I actually did this, and the difference is phenominal!! I have so much more control now that the foot isn't bouncing! The only different thing I did was steal a small alligator clip from hubby's workshop to clip on the top instead of using the hair tie...but either way works and makes a huge difference!

Just wanted to add that she sells a very inexpensive generic foot on her website and it can be ordered for any shank type. I wouldn't want to try this with an expensive name brand foot but will certainly give this a try with a generic one. Also I am going to try putting a plastic zip tie across the top where she uses the rubber band to use as a spacer. Then the extra can be cut off rather than wadded around the top. Don't know why she didn't just cut that top metal part back rather than bend it out of the way. Ann in TN

The only problem that I can see with a zip tie is that you would have to cut it off and redo it for every quilt..each tupe of fabric and batting will change the height you need to ultimately have your foot ...as far as not cutting the metal part...probably because it would leave a sharp edge...I can just imagine having a quilt all bundled up in your throat, then pulling it and tearing the heck out of it! you could probably sand it, I guess, but bending it works fine for me.

I would sand the cut point off smoothly. A little sand paper takes care of those issues nicely. DH has a very well equipped workshop.

It would still scare me...there's no problem with bending it, and it works great!
