    Goodness, guess I should start keeping track of how long I use each needle....I usually don't change it unless I break it!

    if you don't change the needle often enough, it gets scratches and burrs and also gets dull. when that happens, it starts puncturing the fabric instead of sliding between the threads, causing tiny tears in the material. where those tears occur there are weak spots and that's where it wears out soonest. the tears are so tiny, you can't see them, so you have to just change the needle even though it seems to be fine.
