The one thing I would do differently is to stitch in the ditch on the right side where the seam is between the two fabrics. That way it is more secure than hand stitching, and the flange is "loose" like flanges usually are. You can also do it so that the contrasting colour is narrower, and then it looks like piping.

I am going to try this on my tumbler quilt. just need to figure out what color to make my borders...time to dig through my stash. I am trying not to buy any more fabric till I make a dent in my stash.
