If you want to have the top turn out as it is shown in the sketch - with points in tact - you'd need to cut the corner triangles that complete the square-in-a-square larger than is shown.
If you spray the corner pieces with starch before cutting them, and handle carefully, the bias edges shouldn't be a problem.
