    Thanks, craftybear. I have used this theory but only on borders. So, why not on short strips too. Makes sense.

    I mainly do log cabin variations and I always cut my strips on the lengthwise grain. It makes for much more stable blocks when it comes to joining and layering. I think perhaps it's a hang-over from my dressmaking days, but it works!
