If one cuts the beginning squares on bias the ending squares will have straight grain edges. I do like to have the final half square triangles a bit larger so they can be trimmed to exact size.

A walking foot helps in sewing bias edges.

I tried this and got 3 1/4 triangles not 3 1/2 which is what I needed. Thought I had done something wrong so I used a different fabric and got the same results.

I'm trying to make 3 1/2 inch half triangles. If using the technique shown in the video, how large should be actual square be before cutting? Thanks.

These measurements were listed previously but I find they seem to be small. My samples have needed the beginning block 1/4 to 1/2 larger. Best to make a sample and if half square triangle block is too big trim it down.

Agree with the need to make the start blocks a bit bigger and then trim down. The accurate maths would be great. The Easy Angle ruler makes very accurate half-square triangles, although not as fast as the method here.
