I'm just an old (former) garment sewer and I prefer to pull a thread. The fabric gets pulled out of kilter when they put it on rolls and wrap it around the boards so I prefer to make sure I have the straight of grain.
Pulling the threads means that you are going with the weave of the fabric -- I did this after trying to do the folds similar to what is described in the video and I discovered the lines in the weave were way off.
The only exception is panels -- I do wish the manufacturers would make sure they printed the panes on the straight of grain -- no matter how much I pay the panels never seem to be square. If I like the panel, I do the best I can.
Sometimes I do the Eleanor Burns tear, but that creates problems in and of itself so I don't do it too often.
