My only worry would be the stitch in the ditch question. Wouldn't it weaken the seam.

When I first started quilting it was hard for me to press to the side. I had been a "clothing" sewer and was taught to press open. I'll have to try going back to the old way - just to see if i like it more.

Pressing to the side was recom. for hand-piecing originally ... but it also keeps batting fibers from migrating through seams (which all types will do) and also best if you like to do stitch in the ditch quilting

I"ve been stitching in the ditch and press open, never had an issue with it weakening the seam. I think its easier to get really in the ditch with an open seam. As far as batting migrating, this was an issue before batting had a scrim or well bonded (poly) . If you are using a batting with a scrim it should not be an issue. Some bonded poly is not well bonded and it will migrate and beard like an unbonded poly.

Hmmm ? it may be easier, but that may be because it's really only stitching through 2 layers, your batting & backing - instead of 3 layers

Thank you for giving me the backbone to do it. I was taught to sew with clothing so always pressed seams open and only started pressing to the side when I learned to quilt last month. I will press open from now on and the detractors be darned!
