i should elaborate on that a bit I am hand piecing a jacobs ladder with one inch squares i thought it would be good to quilt on my emb machine and make it a quilt as you go quilt think normal hoops might ruin the hand piecing

SingerSewer 06-15-2012 06:23 AM

In response to WVHILLS22 If anyone knows of quilt motifs I can get please let me know. I have them from emblibray, designssewfine, and redleaf. Here is one I just completed.

I have bought quilting designs from Amazing Designs and Anita Goodesign. They are wonderful.

Looks like it depends on the size of the block and what type of quilting you want to do. I just ordered a set of hoops for my Brother PE 770. It includes a 5" X 12" for borders. Your machine and the size hoops it takes will also determine how big a total block you can do. 5" X 5" is as big a square as I can get on my machine (slightly less than that). Some patterns will let you do it in two sections, so if you measure correctly, you could move your fabric in the hoop? Haven't tried any of this yet, but will be soon!

Does anyone know how many stitches a bobbin of 60wt prewound can sew? No, this isn't a trick question, LOL! I have some fairly dense designs, like 45,000 + stitches. I hate running out near the end of one, because it takes so long to get back to where I was once the bobbin is changed. But I also hate to put a new one in if I'm half way through and have enough left for the design.

TanyaL 06-16-2012 12:44 PM

A new bobbin should be more than enough thread. I am curious why it is such a problem to change bobbins though. I use colored thread in my bobbin to match my top thread and change bobbins from 6 - 18 or more times per design. It takes me about a minute or less to change the bobbin and top thread and start stitching again.

Krystyna 06-16-2012 12:59 PM

It depends on what I'm stitching, but if there are a lot of color changes and I'm matching the bobbin, I pre-wind and use one of those little wooden spool racks - set the bobbin on the bottom, the spool on top and in the order it will be used.

I'm going to respond even though every time I do it's like no one reads what I have to say. I posted last week about some sites for quilting designs (which someone asked for) and then there was still another request for the same info. If you go to emblibrary.com and under Kenny's Corner he has a spot where you can calculate how much thread, etc you'll need for projects based on how many stitches are in the design.

Hello Judy... I just wanted to mention that I try to read all the messages in this thread but at yours there are over 887 messages!! And not all are using a quote reply so some can't even be linked to the start message. And many of them include repeated information. I hope that you are the type of person who would be gracious and repeat the same information if it is asked again and again knowing that in this thread it is so easy to lose the information someone might need. Thank you Judy.. Thank you very much for being that person. Hugs and Good Night..

I just had mine serviced.... You'd think it was new right out of the box it works so well... :)

Honchey 06-20-2012 07:47 PM

I would think the embroidery arm needs to be calibrated....If the problem with the machine wasn't fixed I would have returned the machine for further service and not have to pay more for it. If he's an authorized service repair tech...He should know what to do. if he cannot fix it he should have told you or send it to someone that can do the service required to get the designs the way they should be. If all else fails Call the Singer company and have them tell you where to bring the machine in for repair...

I have a question: I'm on a budget and always buy Sulky embroidery thread for my projects and buy them when they're 1/2 off at Joanns (like the next sale July1-7). Are there any other threads that are not too expensive yet can do a beautiful job? Thanks!

Your question brings up a very important other question. What elements of embroidery do you not like? What aspects of thread do you consider not beautiful? Is some thread too shiny? Is some thread not shiny enough? Perhaps you need to be more explicit in exactly what you demand of your thread, then we can help you locate more brands that meet your specifications. I've not used Sulky in a long time so are you using rayon, polyester or silk?

Momo 06-21-2012 03:02 PM

I'm just now finding this thread. Lots to read; so I will just ask and if this is discussed before, maybe someone will redirect me. I'm kinda new to machine embroidery having bought a Viking topaz last year. There's a lot to learn. But I was wondering if anyone uses regular sewing needles to embroider with or must it be embroidery needles? I'm also not sure about which stablizers to use on different fabrics.
Thanks for any help you may be able to provide.

Sorry I didn't provide more info. I use Sulky rayon and noticed that Madeira feels a bit more thicker, both are 40wt ct. Just wanted to know what other brands other than Sulky, Madeira are there.

Krystyna 06-21-2012 05:30 PM

You can find lots of excellent set of thread on eBay. Not brand names, but quite good.

Hi I have the same machine and it uses the same files. I have never used the machine yet and wondered how to download patterns from the intrnet. Where did you get the PED Basic? I have a lot of patterns that are already downloaded to the machine but have just been nervous about trying it and also just finished one of the quilts I needed to I have a few other things to do but would love to join in with you ladies for the embroidery and learn it. It looks so easy on TV craft shows. I am also way behind on e-mails because of so much company this yr so do you ladies have a place where you meet online please let me know or a time. Sue. I have tried poly Thread art thread and it works well with my machine. It sells for 1.65 for 1000 yds or 4.99 for 5000 yds. I do think it is smart to get one or two spools to try to make sure you machine likes it.

Check your manual... my brother machine can use regular machine needles.. it's the size, I use 11's with a sharp point not the ball point. I also go to ArtisticThreadWorks.com to learn lots of stuff. They have 100's of video tuts.

I used metro thread.. www.metroemb.com $.85 for the mini spools and $2.85 for the big spools. I loved it, but my new machine doesn't. Buy a couple of spools and give it a try. Just a thought. :)

Ccorazone 06-21-2012 07:15 PM

ThreadArt sell decent spools. Both large and small.

I have a question on how all of you "store" the embroidery module for your machines when you are not using them.
I have the Ellisimo machine and the module is HUGE. I never had a problem with my Bernina module - I would sleep in the little bag it came with. However, the case for this machine wears more than my granddaughters! LOL In addition, it's big and doesn't fit in my sewing room.

I'm trying to come up with a basket or something for the times it is not on my machine. I've thought of putting it on end and putting it under my sewing table but not sure that is perfect (or the correct way to store it either).

Would love to see/hear how you've solved this problem.
Karen

Divokittysmom 06-21-2012 08:37 PM

I always use an embroidery needle for machine embroidery. The needle itself is made slightly different to accomodate the friction the thread will incur during the fast speeds of the machine as it's embroidering. Also, I do believe the point of the needle is a bit different than a regular needle is. I don't believe that it would harm the machine to use a regular needle, but you will definitely get a better stitch out if you use an embroidery needle. Just my 2 cents worth.

Hi Karen, I too have an Ellisimo and agree that suitcase for the unit is enormous!! I actually store mine under our guest bed!! It's not really too difficult to get out from underneath it, and it doesn't take up valuable floor or closet space in my sewing room! HTH

My Brother has a carrying case that my embroidery unit fits into. It is as large as my sewing machine. Probably there is a case available for your unit that you can buy. The cases protects and keeps the unit dust free. I think that dust is probably a very big problem for these embroidery units and the computers inside them.

I buy mine on EBay also. I had to try a couple of sources but finally found an ART SILK thread (rayon) sold from Great Britain manufactured in Pakistan that I love and is delivered to me such a reasonable price that I can order every color they have. I just wish they had more colors. My Brother loves the thread.

[QUOTE=Karenowc;5307346]I have a question on how all of you "store" the embroidery module for your machines when you are not using them.

I splurged and bought the case for my Topaz 30. It is rather large, but I feel good about it being protected from dust and damage. The units are so expensive, I figured the cost of the case was worth protecting the embroidery unit.

TIC(tongue in cheek LOL) Why store it at all? I see from your ''signature'' under your post, that you have other machines to sew on. Seriously, it was a hassle for me, because I love the sewing features on my Brother ULT so much, that when opportunity came to buy 2nd hand one, I DID! I leave emb. unit attached to one all the time, and sew on the other--even tho I have 11 more machines to use. If I ever get into a real embroidery mood, I can 'fire' them both up. Meanwhile one unit is stored in it's humongous case w/hoops and behind a spare bdrm door. It all comes down to priorities!
