I think I've wrote this before. My mom does beautiful hand embroidery. So does my youngest DD. There are 5 yr olds that can do better handwork than I can, it's one of the reasons I wanted to get into machine embroidery. My mom wants nothing to do with my machines, she says it's cheating. We laugh about it because she does love the things I've made for her and my dad.

I am hoping to fire up my embroidery machine this winter and have some fun.I have not used that part of my machine for too long to say.

coffeecozy 12-01-2014 04:44 AM

I tried out a new spool of thread yesterday. it was a robinson anton 40 weight and the colour was metallic black. it was very shiny, but did not look the same as say the tinsel look of typical metallic thread. i was ready for trouble. surprise, it stitched perfectly and all i did was slow the machine down a tiny bit and back off the tension a tiny bit. no needle change. just thought i'd share this because it's the right time of year for sparkly threads.

I loved the way the orange and red mylar looked in the designs. I have also made greeting cards using the mylar patterns. Are really cute.

I took a Mylar class at All brands Sew & Vac - I really liked it we made book marks. You can order mylar, or
like someone said buy at dollar store, or as my teacher said she used mylar ballons, i just bought 3 to try out.
Ballons without air, seems ok. 3 colors $3.00. Now i just need time to try it out, that is really hard to come by
lately.

Although I have gotten a ton of free designs I also have invested a good amount on other designs and not about to lose any of it.

I just this past week spent the time to organize them in folders and named many of them so I could easily find them in various categories. Had not done this earlier on and it was a mess trying to find things. I even color coded my flash drives by where I bought the designs so if something happens I can go back to that site and re-download it if need be.

Iam in the same spot trying to organize it a mess, it really better to start off right. Tried to get someone to do it for me, now it is really a mess they did not understand embroidery designs and i have changehow to open etc.
I must say to others organize, sort, etc.from the start. Sometimes I think I could use a better brain,.

One of things that I love is that if you click on a design and then click on the pair of scissors at the top it'll add trim commands to designs that have lots of jump stitches that you'll have to trim off later on. You can't digitize as far as creating designs. I'm going to give you a website that offers so much. The guy has written books on the software and has lots of free tutorials and is even overing video classes for sale now. My Viking teacher says she loves his books and uses them herself even though she was trained by Viking. He has things for 4D and 5D; they are both pretty much the same. It's a good way to learn. I bought 5D Pro this past yr and I'm now taking classes for that along with my monthly embroidery club. I'll answer anything that I can. The website is mrpatience.com I hope this helps. If you need an answer right away then PM me and it'll let me know, instead of waiting for me to find this thread. Good luck. http://www.mrpatience.com/

Thanks so kind of you!

I have a Brother Dreammaker VE2200 which is about my 4th Brother embroidery machine. Each one has been traded up for a newer model. I love the Brother, it is has loads of user friendly helpful additions, they are majorly user friendly machines in all aspects of operation. I use Embird as my embroidery software, not for digitizing, there are enough professionals out there without my feeble attempts :-) most digitizers have free samples which are great to see how the designs stitch out, before purchasing. At the moment I am stitching out hexagon placemats, completely done in the hoop, they are brilliant. I purchased them from Kreative Kiwi Embroidery, absolutely brilliant, "In the Hoop Christmas Table Toppers".
This machine also handles Metallic threads brilliantly, have used some really cheap metallics, slowed the machine down to 350 rrp, was using a Superior Topstitch needle, it just stitched away, no problems.

I'm considering buying an embroidery machine, so I can do monograms and letterings for my Etsy business. Budget is preferably not more than $3000. Heard about the Brother NV1250D, which is great for FMQ too. However, I also heard that the embroidery fonts are rather small, and can't do big monograms. Any comments on this? Or advice on other brands and models which can do big embroidery monograms and is good for FMQ? I thought of Bernina but it's way beyond my budget!

I assume that you are referring to the built-in monogram fonts. You will likely need to buy/donload larger machine embroidery fonts.

it depends on what you mean by Small monograms or big monograms. The largest monogram on my Janome MC200e, which is Janomes entry level machine, are about 3" tall when done at their largest setting. my MC350e does them a little larger than that. You can use software to enlarge things or buy larger fonts, but I've found that the monograms in my machines are plenty big enough, even for bath towels and such.

Hello All!
my hubby surprised me with a singer futura xl420 on Black Friday! Still getting used to it as I previously embroidered on my Piaf 7570 (which still sews beautifully but only embroiders when it feels like it).

i have a few questions about needles and bobbins - just to start. I was told that I could only use singer needles and absolutely no prewound bobbins in it. From what I read online it seems that I can use schmetz or organ needles and prewound bobbins as long as they are 15j bobbins.

Doess as anyone have this machine or a similar one in the singer futura line that can help me figure this out?

also, I am searching for a preferably free cutesy baby's first Christmas design.

I have propably thousands of designs but can't seem to find one for my grandnephew.

thanks,
Lisa

Neesie 12-04-2014 07:40 AM

This site has lots of free patterns (you can get up to three free ones per week) and many would work, with additional wording.

I am new to sewing, quilting and embroidery and have learned A LOT in the last few months. I have made two quilts (among other things) and hand embroidered the labels for them. I am pretty proud of them... Not too bad for a novice. IMO : )

My husband surprised me with a Brother PE-770 last week and I am really excited to play with it. Oh, I have tested out some of the presets, but I really want to make my own Designs. Does anyone have any suggestions on an embroidery or a digitizing software? I have been trying to do some research online, but it is extremely overwhelming and have only managed to confuse myself. LOL

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you. :)

EDIT: I have spent the last two hours reading this thread hoping to find the information, but it is 289 pages long... 289!! I only scratched the surface. 😊

Check out the free demos for SewArt and SewWrite. :)

I've recently done similar searching and have been playing with the above programs. :)

I am looking for a frosted white thread (or white metallic) to embroider snowflakes for a quilt. I checked Superior Threads, but didn't see white frosted. Can someone recommend a good brand that would have this type of thread? I have a Bernina 630, and it is temperamental when it comes to metallics. I usually use Superior metallics with no problems.

Thanks for your advice.

Quilty-Louise 12-11-2014 12:42 PM

Madeira thread has a white opal effect (not really sure what it is called).
Has a beautiful sparkle to it.

It is the one I have used with GREAT success and looks great. I used it
to make icicle ornaments.

Thanks, Quilty-Louise!, I am off to do some googling.

coffeecozy 12-12-2014 04:55 AM

I just used some Robinson Anton j metallic in a color called iris. Perfect for a snow flake and was very easy to stitch.

I know, this topic is so large it is hard to navigate coming in fresh, in my opinion.

Bneighbor 12-15-2014 01:26 PM

I think it would be nice if this embroidery thread had it own section (not sure that is what I wanted to say, but hope it makes sense)

Quilty-Louise 12-15-2014 02:59 PM

Yes this makes perfect sense.

I personally have sent a request to PatriceJ about setting up a new
forum for machine embroidery.

I got a quick fast "no" as my reply.

No reason giving nothing else said. I know I am not the only person
to send the request about it.

With so many quilters crossing into embroidery and adding embroidery to their quilts, you would think that adding an embroidery forum would be an enhancement. Quite frankly, since this forum does not want to cover embroidery to enhance quilting, we may not get new members because they may look at other forums to find information. I understand that those die-hard quilting perfectionist will not care, but I want to expand my horizons and bring more to my craft. I don't want to be stagnant, doing the same old stuff. Good thing our quilting ancestors progressed with the times.

Olectra 12-15-2014 07:16 PM

I am definitely going to add embroidery to my quilting and have been looking for an embroidery forum as awesome as the Quilting Board. It would be awesome to have them in one place though. :)

I agree. Embroidery is a lot more related to quilting, than recipes.

sherian 12-15-2014 07:58 PM

i enjoy all sewing.

Love sewing, quilting, embroidery etc. Enjoy reading this site alongwith learning and enjoying.

coffeecozy 12-16-2014 03:46 AM

I thoyght maybe by keeping the embroidery related questions as part of the regular forum it keeps more people reading the posts. We are using many of the same materials so help and advice is a common body of knowledge.

Sandygirl 12-16-2014 03:56 AM

Sew Forum is mostly embroidery topics these days. Sandy

Olectra 12-16-2014 04:20 AM

I just went over to the Sew Forum. I discovered that you have to register in order to see the topics.

I have been a member of Sew Forum for a number of years. I see no problem with registering, since you had to register for this quilt forum. They cover a great deal of subjects, something for everyone. But my request is more for adding embroidery to THIS forum to enhance quilting. When I sew, I refer to sewing forums, when I race I go to racing forums, when I quilt, I want to come here. How hard is this request? Especially since so many would like to have an embroidey forum and have voiced their opinion.I get ads once in a while from All Brands (the owner of the site), and you can opt-out of their emails. Btw, they do have great sales. To the powers that be; can we, who love quilting, have an embroidery forum too?

Sandygirl 12-16-2014 04:02 PM

Just post your embroidery related questions as a new thread topic.

I dont know of ANY online forum that does not require registering. Even Yahoo groups require it. What is the big deal?
sandy

Olectra 12-16-2014 07:58 PM

I registered, not a big deal. I had seen that forum before, but didn't see any recent posts so I thoight it was a dead board. I was able to see that it is really an active board after I registered.

It would pretty awesome to have an emroidery forum here since I will be using embroidery on most of my quilts. No biggie though. :)

I agree. Many of the quilters I am acquainted with have embroidery machines. Everyone I know who has an embroidery machine would love to learn to do more on them and certainly more tricks and tips. Thank you for posting about an Embroidery Forum.

chamby 12-17-2014 06:50 AM

I was wondering if anyone owns a singer embroidery machine. I have read only bad reviews on this machine. Would love to hear from someone who actually has one and uses it regularly. I really can not afford the machines that are thousands of dollars. I would like to do larger designs. However, I do not want to waste my money on a machine that is only going to give me problems. Would appreciate any help.
Thanks Charlene

quiltnut4ever 12-18-2014 05:11 PM

Charlene have you checked out the Brother PE770. From what I hear on this forum there are many that have it and have not had a problem. Cost wise it is not too expensive compared to the Singer. I'm sure whatever you choose you will love it. :sew:
