I have had a Brother, two singers and now I have the Babylock Ellisimo one love it. The singer future was a great machine also. I like to do a lot of the in the hoop designs. I made my 9 year old baby girls bedding for her crib when she was born. Getting ready to make another baby girl set not sure if will embroidery or not. I did the quilt, made sheets, did dust ruffle and made the bumper pad also. It was fun to do. I have made wall hangings and table runners, etc.

sosew4fun 04-07-2015 03:03 AM

My first was a Janome 350 which did a great job. I now have a Brother PR600 and a PR620 which I use in a small
business from my home. Before buying need to decide what you want to produce and go from there. they are a
lot of fun to use and not as challenging as many people think at first glance.

Hi Everyone! Thanks Craftybear. It is a fun thread.
I have a Viking Designer Ruby and have been experimenting with appliqué for wall hangings and small quilt projects.

I love seeing your projects!

What a shame, PamQuilts, I am sure you could learn a lot yourself just by having your instruction book beside the machine and work through each section. I have never had a formal lesson and have learnt to master my machines. I am sure you can do it.

I just found this thread and I am amazed at how many members have an embroidery machine. My husband bought me my first embroidery machine, a Janome MC9000 in 1996 as a 30th wedding anniversary present and five years later on our 35th anniversary he bought me a Janome MC10000 which became upgraded to a MC10001. These were wonderful machines and I got a lot of pleasure from all the embroidery that I did on them. These machines have been passed on to my daughter and daughter in law and I replaced them with a Brother Quattro Innovis 6000D and a six needle Brother PR620. I still have these wonderful machines and last year my husband bought me the new Janome MC15000 which I love very much. I am very fortunate that I am able to have these machines all that goes with them. As most of you would know the machine is only the beginning, then comes the expense of threads, needles, stabilizer, bobbin fill, designs, software , the servicing of the machines and so on. It is a very large hole to fill. Friends have asked my advice on purchasing an embroidery machine and the advice I give them is to remember that the machine is only the beginning of the first money you will spend and possibly the machine is the cheapest part. However, it is a wonderful hobby and pastime and one can create all manner of wonderful items on these machines and if you feel inclined you can also earn a little to help support your machine embroidery habit.
There is a range of wonderful embroidery software available, I have the Buzz tools programs and also Embrilliance (which I still have to master). I think I have become too comfortable with the Buzz tools programs. There are also millions of great embroidery designs out there digitized by wonderful and talented digitizers. Embroidery Library is certainly one which I have been with since their beginning and also Secrets of Machine Embroidery is a wonderful site where they have a lot of digitizers designs for sale.

Thank you Crafty Bear for starting this thread, I am trying to wade my way through all the posts.

I have two good designs on two separate dish towels (the other side of the towel is ruined with a unusable partial design) and I've decided that I am going to cut the good designs from each towel and sew them together with some fun fabric so I can keep them for me. What do you do with boo boos?

My Father in law had a saying " A man who never made a mistake, never made anything!" I believe that there is no teacher like experience and so long as we learn, a mistake is not a bad thing.

There are a lot of online videos and Craftsy has some great classes to help you learn. I have a Brother PE770 in bought online so it didn't come with classes. I've taken classes online and gotten books to learn. I still have a lot to learn but I got started. Try some of the online classes to get you started.

Opps! I meant to reply to the post from PamQuilts.

Katiedid2, love your blocks. What is the embroidery design and is it art format also.

MaggieLou 06-12-2015 05:54 AM

I'm trying to decide on a digitizing program. I would love to have PE Design Next but can't justify the price. I think I've narrowed it down to Embrillance or Embrid. I would like to hear from you that have either of these programs what do you think of them. Are they easy to use, easy learning curve, etc? TIA

Katiedid2 06-12-2015 01:51 PM

I do have PE design and Janome MBX. Digitizing. . Don't know about the 2 u mentioned. I like the Janome software, use it a lot.

WOW it has been OVER a month since anyone posted to this
forum, so here is a bump to bring it back to the top.

I have been working on TRYING to clean, organize, and destash
my fabric so I have not been able to do any sewing in quite some
time.

But I sure do miss it and more so I miss doing any embroidery.

Muse&Sew 07-25-2015 04:09 PM

So what tricks have others used in doing towels?

For towels I hoop the backing, use 505 spray to hold the towel to the backing and for the topper, and use a basting stitch to hold it all together. I started doing it this way after I warped a hoop fighting with towels.

Cari

Muse&Sew 07-25-2015 06:32 PM

Thanks Cari! What topper do you use?

Cari-in-Oly 07-25-2015 10:43 PM

I use Pellon Sol-U-Film Lite. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Pellon-Sol...Yards/21976579
For real dense designs I use two layers. You can either use a warm iron to press the layers together or use a light spray of adhesive to stick the layers together.

I agree with the bump up. I have been hooked on embroidery tissue paper rolls but I need to move on to other things. I think I am going to try to embroidery on some baby clothes next. I have spent quite a bit of my weekend cleaning out my sewing room and organizing my embroidery thread. Need to learn more about what and how to embroidery. I may try embroidery on soap as well.

I have a Viking, but haven't used the embroidery yet. I am thinking of using it for tote bags and window treatments.

I wish people would post more in here.....we can all benefit from new tips and ideas....I have learnt so much from this board ...... As for embroidering towels......I have a small janome 350E which had caused me a lot if problems at first but once it got fixed its really working great......someone gave me a tip which I am using ...I don,t hoop the tower....I just put the towel on top if the hoop and placing a sheet of paper over it......the machine stitches over the paper.....which I have to remove after the design is stitched....it does take some time to get all the paper out if there especially if the design is very saturated but it works.....and eventually all the paper will get out with the washing......
.......I had also embroider on a jacket..but I did used the hoop for it.....I would like to know if someone here got another hoop for this machine beside the two standart hoops and if its worth the investment since I read different opinions iver the mega hoop ( doesn,t always work..? )

I think the reason this thread is not used so often, is you can't find it because there is no sticky. Any one have a way to pull this up quickly? I love this thread.

Me too, I'm always up for trying something new.
I haven't tried a larger hoop. I guess I'm a bit backward because I always wonder if I can get a design into a smaller hoop. If a design calls for a 5x7 hoop but will work in a smaller hoop(like the 5x5) I'll do it in the smaller hoop. Same with a design for a 4 inch hoop. If it's really small, I'll see if it will work in the 2 1/2 inch hoop. The smaller the hoop, the smaller the piece of stabilizer, the easier the project is to hoop(or float) and the less chance of any distortion. As long as it's not a real finely detailed or dense design, those are a whole 'nuther thing.

Cari, i am with you. I prefer quicker stitch-outs vs the jumbo hoop time-suck designs. I like to embellish polo shirts with fun "logo. Size designs. Anything that takes over an hour to stitch, I am not interested. No, i don't sew while my embroidery stitches. That is way too much multi-tasking . I take the opportunity to pick up my sewing room, re-organize etc.

I hope to get some projects done in the fall. For now, i spend time outside before we head into the darker evenings of fall.

I use water-soluble stabilizer on top of the towel which washes out beautifully. I think it would drive me nuts to try to pick out all the paper bits!

Sophie ~ Your ornaments are wonderful. Where did you get the designs? I have that pattern for placemats. Hadn’t thought of using Christmas fabric. Your work is beautiful!

I’ve been working on some baby bibs with DD. Many of them are using machine embroidery and they are turning out really cute. We used some of her DH’s old jeans.

Has anyone tried over-starching fabric to help with the puckering?

DJ, I got the pattern for the ornaments from Embroidery Library - Vintage Christmas. I really enjoyed stitching them out. I have used the placemat pattern a lot. It is my "go-to" placemat pattern. When we travel I like picking up fat quarters for the placemats which then reminds me of our travels long after the trip.

I have lots of time sucking designs like Loralie and others that I do when the project I'm making calls for them but I do prefer smaller ones. Sometimes I'll get two of my machines going at the same time, the kidlets love watching Grammas' "magic machines", but I tried getting all 3 going at once only one time, it was too crazy trying to keep up with the thread changes. Sewing and embroidering at the same time? No, I want to concentrate on one process (and one mess) at a time.

I'll use a heavy tear away for the back of a towel if it's a dense design since it holds up better in the hoop but I always use wash away for the top.

I don't know if heavy starching will help with puckering. I figured out after many hours of playing around with my machines that most of my pucker issues were caused by hooping too tight and/or stabilizer issues. I stopped using tear away for most projects, went to a medium weight cut away and I don't hoop most items any more, just the stabilizer. Changing my process solved most of my issues, I rarely have puckering any more. There is so much information and tutorials out there on the net, you just have to figure out which process works best for you.

I am looking to purchase a gift for my SIL who has a Janome 9700. She wants a magnetic hoop for embroidering heavier things such as towels. If I purchase the Magna Hoop Jumbo is that all that she will need? Is this the correct magnetic hoop (it says for Janome 9700 MC)? Sorry to ask so many questions, but I am confused>>
