After a wonderful trip, and was kinda sorta on my way home, it was time to visit Winterset. Ahhhhhhhhh - you know, "The Bridges of Madison County" place??? Come to find out, "the" bridge burned down, along with Francesca's house. NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - but the locals DID inform me that it was true.....NUTS! Well, FIRST stop was at the Fons and Porter quilt shop......it was alot smaller than I had thought........'met some really really nice shoppers there==='had lunch at the "dessert" restaurant across the square. They were from North Carolina and were traveling across the US visiting all of the National Parks - nice people. Then 3 blocks away was the birthplace of Marion Morrison (I THINK that is right) you know, the Duke - John Wayne - The ole feet were sore and I just took a picture from the car. Anyway, fun trip, just wish my energy level was higher and I was alot younger. But try "exploring" by yourself someday - it is really fun!

Brings back memories, I lived not far from there for 25 years. Yes, the Fons and Porter shop is small but the help is first class.:)

I have seen his home before and it amazes me how small it is.

Glad you had a great trip. John Wayne's house ... such a small house for such a big man.

I too *road trip* by my lonesome. My two longest solo drives are from Chicago to Billings MT - then down into Yellowstone via Bear Tooth, out through Jackson Hole, then back home. Second longest solo trip was Chicago to Hampton VA (near Norfolk). Lots and lots of solo trips to KY, MI, IN, IA, MO, and OH.

WOW Doghousemom!! YOU are the brave one! - I am taking "baby steps" The Next trip might be Dodge CIty Kansas - anyone been there? I always wanted to go - am a fan of Gunsmoke. DH said he would like to see it "someday", but ya know - that "someday" never becomes NOW. I will take a break here and if I don't have my foot surgery - just might go by October. YOU, tho, are a really brave woman!

I go to dog shows. There is only one a year in my county :)

The Billings trip was a combination dog show/visit brother/scatter my husbands ashes in Hells Roaring Canyon near Bear Tooth Pass.

I enjoy driving. I plug my iPod into my car and listen to books or music. The time really passes. I even got brave enough to see exactly how fast my Ford Windstar van was willing to go (loaded with 2 dogs, crates, grooming table, and assorted equipment) along a stretch of I90 somewhere in the middle of SD while I was counting "Wall" billboards (lost count after 150+).

    Top speed.

    I had a tail wind :)

So did you go to Wall Drug? It's a tourist trap but I always have to stop. I remember when it was one small building with a plaza out back with the free ice water. Now it covers and entire block or more.

I envy you girls. I would love to take off on my own and stop where I want to, but DH would have a fit. Who would feed him? I have driven to Kansas City several times on my own, but no farther than that.

Actually, I spent the night in Wall. I had left early in the AM and when I looked at the time nearing Wall and did some quick calculations to drive through to Billings, put me at 2:00 AM which is too late to knock on my brothers door and say "howdy". Plus, I wanted to make a stop at Rushmore and the morning was the best time. I was glad I did, it was awesome.
