"Test" stitching an embroidery motif

I have a Bernina 730e and am fairly new at the embroidery process. I've created a motif of several lines of letters and will need to place it in a specific spot on a quilt. Is it possible to do a 'test' that would just outline the entire motif? I've done a few tests so far and it takes so long and uses so much thread, I'm sure there must be a better way. Help!

If the project is important, then a "real" test is crucial. Are you uncertain of how it will stitch out, or are you worried about placement?
If it's placement you're concerned with, I have a suggestion. Mark the intersecting lines on the block where the design will be stitched (I'm assuming you've already pieced the top).
Take a water soluble glue stick, and rub it on the bottom of your inner hoop. Put the plastic template in the hoop, and set the inner hoop on top the area to be embroidered, matching up the template to your marked intersecting lines.
The glue will keep the hoop from slipping as you put the outer hoop below and pop them together.

I will be embroidering directly onto the quilt, into a preset space, so I have been tracing the outline of that space, then using that as my test piece to see how it looks inside the space. I've had to move it here and there because the space is not uniform, so additional tests must be done each time. I'm so hoping there is a way to just do an outline of each letter, not the entire satin stitch.
