Yes you can sew with the blade on the fabric.

It's simply see thru so you can watch your fabric go thru and see how close you are to the 1/4" mark. Unless you are having problems with the one that came with your Janome (I have one too), it's not worth the investment.

It has a blade at l/4" on the side of the foot so all you have to do is keep the fabric bumped up against it. Then your seam is the same all the way through. Clear as mud?

I think it's pretty clear. And yes, it's the first attachment I bought for my cheap $100 sewing machine before upgrading to Janome's. Makes perfect 1/4" seams. Also, they are under $20.

I love the 14" foot for piecing. What Mine has the blade also. What is a little foot ....heard of the big foot too but don't know anything about them.

When you are doing something like hst's where you are not sewing along the edge of the fabric, do you remove the foot and put a regular foot on? Or can you sew with the blade running ACROSS the fabric?

Are you asking about trying to use the foot if you make HST's from squares? If so, no I don't use the 1/4" foot with the blade on the side. I do use a narrow-edge foot that has a blade but it is in the center of the foot (some call it a stitch-in-the-ditch foot).

If I make HST's from bias cut triangles, then I do use my 1/4" foot with the blade.

I'm not sure this explanation helped. I think I just confused myself. :roll:

The clear foot can also be made into a 1/8" foot. Not a big deal for some probably. I like a 1/8" seam (like for shadow quilting) sometimes.

it is a snap on foot, and i believe,it can be bought for high shank or low shank machine. so be sure to ask, to get the right one.

"big foot" is used for Free motion quilting. it also goes by what machine you have..

I recommend the bladed one to all my students. Wouldn't be without one (I have at least 3(:) one for each machine:)

Just a heads up, to the new piecers/quilters, just because you have a 1/4" foot on your machine, does NOT mean you get the 1/4" seam allowance!
your machine needle needs to be moved to the left or right, to get the proper seam allowance.
