Have fun showing your Dd how to quilt. I wish mine were interested.

Fence Rail blocks are easy. Yellow Brick Road is a great pattern for a beginer. She would learn to read a pattern and follow directions too.

Teach her to sew, and share the fun things that you enjoy.

I don't have anything to add to what the others have said...I just want to say that her request for her birthday is a GREAT reflection on you!! How many kids want to spend that kind of time with their mother?

You must be doing a good job of raising your kids!! :)

You are so lucky! I have tried for years to get my daughter interested (she's almost 25) and no luck. She loves quilts, the ones I make but has no patience for any needlework! Her talents lie elsewhere, so I praise those! Have fun with her. I, like others, would start with something simple and work your way up to more complicated things. I would, of course, take her to your favorite store and let her pick out colors (isn't that half the fun!). Enjoy, glad to have another quilter!

Sounds like a gift card to you LQS is in order---that way she can pick out her own fabrics.

    then:

Does she know how to sew at all? If not, use lined notebook paper without bobbin or top thread until she's comfortable with sewing a straight line. You can draw squares, diamonds, circles and spirals on paper for her to follow also. Then start with a simple 4 patch or nine patch.

My sister had her 2 grandchildren make the blocks for the quilt on the cover of the Cat's Meow book by Kime. The youngest was not even 11 yet. The blocks were all different colors. I was given the job of putting all the blocks together & finishing the quilt. I'm hoping the girls have held onto that quilt as my sister lost her battle with colon cancer in 2001.

Thanks for all the input guys... I'll look up some of these quilts in the pictures part and see what she likes the most, then figure out how much is needed of how many fabrics.

my daughter also never had any interest in sewing anything, even though i've been multi-crafting all her life (and most of mine)and she is 30-something...but much to my glee, all 3 of my granddaughters LOVE TO SEW AND QUILT! the youngest made her first quilt when she was 4 and had to make one to send her daddy in Iraq so he wouldn't forget her...she had been collecting fabrics (boy, that's a different tale) so she laid it all out on the floor, i did any cutting and all ironing that needed to be done, she designed it and sewed it all.. we even tipped a dresser on its side for her to stand on so she could quilt it herself on the long-arm.

btw.//./the older 2 girls have each made a quilt or two...but they are much more interested in making purses...the middle child (age 13 now) loves doing hand embroidery and does an amazing job!
