I agree with applique with using fleece for the batting & then flannel for the backing. That will make it toasty warm. Or even get a blanket from K-Mart or Wal-Mart & use as batting. They are cheep but make a quilt very warm.

I think the plaids will be great, no matter what. I think he'll love it because it's warm, it's not girly, and most of all, because YOU made it lovingly for HIM!

Of all the quilts I've made, this plaid flannel quilt is the most popular in my house full of guys - they love the flannel and the colors. I think you'll do just fine with your fabrics. :)

You might think about fleece for a backing...sure would be warm then.

I love the look of plaids going every which way. I would use them and not worry about getting each exactly straight. Just adds to the charm! Flannel can be tricky to work with. You may want to wash it first, starch it heavily and wash the whole thing when it is finished.

I did a Turning 20 as a raggy quilt, with plaid flannels ( a flannel back,a flannel "batt", and of course the flannel top, and I have to say, of all the quilts I've done - and it's A LOT, that one is the warmest of them all!

Good luck on your quilt. Just be sure to shrink the flannel by washing it in hot water and drying it on high heat or it will shrink lots. I sometimes wash my flannel 2 x to make sure it won't shrink further. I think that the quilt will be really appreciated!

Here is a picture of an all plaid quilt I made king size for my son and his wife using the Yellow Brick Road Pattern.

Great quilt! At first glance I thought it was made from 'shirttails', men's shirts. Love the look.
