I recommend the same Kona. I bought ten yards years ago and I'm about to the end of it. Need to stock up soon.

I am a fan of Kona Black... and like you learned there are many shades of black. I always buy at least 1 yard more than I need.. because if I run out while working on a project. The prospect of finding the same black again from the same dye lot... Slim.

I prefer and use many shades of black..I think it makes a quilt a LOT more interesting.
Even if you are using all from the same bolt how will you know the right side from the wrong side?
Are you willing to keep track of that, plus that each black component is going up with the straight of grain, or all going sideways with the grain?
Because they will show those differences in the finished quilt.
sometimes we just have to sit down and sew

Yes , sometime we just need to sit down and sew ... and stop being so-o-o-o critical ...

Buying a bolt is what I do. I keep a bolt on hand at all times. Some "blacks" are dyed to be a true black vs. the printer dumping all colors in the vat to make make a "black". Hence, the variations in black. I also keep a bolt of white in my sewing room. Not all whites are equal.
Michael Miller is a true black as is Blank Quiltings' Eclipse black. I am currently using a double-dyed black from Maywood. As long as you are consistent in using only one "black" in your project you should be good to go.
