Question 505 Basting spray - looking for good source as of Mar 2012

    Hi everyone,

I have a quick question about the 505 basting spray. Does anyone have a good source for it? Some prior posts about it mentioned Joanns and Sew for Less. Sew For Less has the case of 12 cans (17 oz size) for about $153, which is a high enough price that it qualifies for free shipping. While I'd rather not spend that much at a time, I will if that's the best price. I don't see it on sale at Joann's this week. Does anyone know of any other places with a decent price currently?

Also, for those who have ordered from Sew For Less, would you recommend them?

    Thanks,
    qbquilts

I order 2 cans at a time from sewforless. Theirs are the larger cans made in Europe (red instead of yellow; same stuff), so I think they are a better value than might appear at first glance if you are comparing to the large yellow cans. The large red cans are 17 oz, whereas the large yellow cans are 11.5 oz. Here's a link to the cans I order (which I think is the same type as you are looking at by the case):

I personally would not order an entire case just because I'm sure there is a shelf life to these things. How long do you think a case would last you? I would be afraid that a can older than a year or so might not work so well anymore. All of these sprays are made with chemicals, and chemical reactions over time can make a spray perform differently, I think.

At Joann's, you can use your coupons, maybe 40% or 50% off. If you don't get their paper, go onliine and they send the coupons in your email. I would not buy a case at a time either.

When I can not get 505 , I use the dritz brand at JoAnn's and use a coupon of its not on sale . I think its on sale this week 50 % off quilting notions. I have come to learn not all JoAnn flyers are the same across the country.

None of our JoAnn's carry 505 spray. In fact, they've never even heard of it!

Yep, me too. Delivery was excellent. Wonder why all the stores stopped selling it? But I'm happy with the price from sewforless.

My local Joann's doesn't carry 505 for some reason - only Dritz and June Taylor. Online I found Joann's does carry it, but it is not in the Quilting section, it is in the Adhesive section and it is in both the 11.5 oz and 17.5 oz size cans.

When I did an online search for it on the Joann's website it could not be found, so it pays to search outside the box if you are trying to find it online.

It was on sale at Joann's on line a couple of weeks ago and I found a coupon for free shipping. I've had a can over a year and it was fine.

I have ordered from Sew for Less with very good results (not the 505 but other stuff). I too, would be leary of ordering a whole case unless you really use A LOT of it. You might be better off paying a little shippping or finding friends that want some!
