Default 7 year old Brother machine just unboxed, what next?

So, unexpectedly, I was just gifted with a BrotherXR3140, which has literally been in the sealed original box for, I'm told, 7 years! It's been indoors, in air conditioning during the summer, and, as it's Arizona, humidity is not a concern either. Should I still have it serviced, or just plug it in and go?? I've never had a situation like this, machine wise. Appreciate your thoughts!

Just plug it in and go! I mean, if it had been sitting in a store and you bought it in the same box, same sealed packaging, would you service it? I wouldn't. (I'm assuming that by "sealed" we mean new, never opened? Not opened, used, sealed shut with tape for 7 years, right?) I would check the cord first, as with any machine, to make sure there are no frayed wires (can't imagine why there would be, but better safe than sorry). Enjoy!

What a nice gift, congratulations. I would definitely oil it since it has been sitting so long...other than that, you should be okay. Enjoy your new machine.

Plug it in and go! It is as close to brand new as it can get. You should have many years of sewing and lovely quilts from this baby! Happy quilting.

Read the manual first. Machine oil evaporates so it probably needs lubrication especially in the bobbin area. If it is self lubricating then it has to be run for the heat to release the silicone from the gears.

Ha! That's why I keep coming back, many here have sound, logical minds! Checked the manual, it is not recommended- nor do they explain where or how to- oil the machine! Thank you so much. She's set up, bobbin wound and ready to play!

It is OK to oil the wick in your bobbin case. o just a few drops. I also use a drop of machine oil....has to be sewing machine oil, on the shaft that holds the needle and goes up and down....no much though.
Machine "grease" and some oils for inside your machine would need to go to the shop. Your machine should be fine just plug and go! Have fun.
